Triangle is an artist residency program based in Brooklyn, NY that focuses on process, ideas, and building community. A new addition to our program is a 3-day intensive (May 27 - 29, 2028), featuring group activities and programming focused on the theme “The Fourth Wall.” The intensive reinvents our original program, the Triangle Artists Workshop. Begun in 1982, the Workshop was intended to “combat the loneliness of the studio,” in the words of our founder, artist Anthony Caro. Staff will use the Fourth Wall theme as a lens through which to curate the programs and activities of the May intensive. Artists will also have occasional opportunities to engage with the theme during the course of their 3-month residency. Details are below.
About the Theme:
Triangle’s 2027-2028 theme is The Fourth Wall. The concept of the Fourth wall refers to the imaginary wall that separates an audience from the actors on a stage, so that the drama can take place “realistically,” as though no one is watching. Expanded beyond its origins in theater, this notion can be applied to any visual art medium, to explore ideas of observation, attention, individuality and publicness, illusion and belief, and other concepts in contemporary art. We are interested in the Fourth wall’s connotation of an imaginary but shared boundary, and its connections to aesthetic and social experience.
About the Intensive:
The Triangle intensive takes place in New York City and consists of 3 days of staff-curated activities around the theme of The Fourth Wall. The intensive will occur once a year (May 27-29, 2028), and includes all residents for the year (approximately 16 artists). Convening an entire annual cohort, the intensive builds connections between residency seasons and encourages artists to imagine different ways of approaching their work. Examples include visits to a relevant site in NYC; studio visits with relevant artists or other cultural figures; group dinners; and other shared activities. Artists are required to be available for the full intensive dates, regardless of their studio residency season. For example, if you are accepted to a residency for September - November 2027, you would re-join us for the intensive May 27-29, 2028.
About the Studio Residency
Studio residencies are 3 months long. We are a small residency, typically consisting of 4 artists per season. Artists are not expected or required to produce an exhibition, project, or specific outcome. During each three-month studio residency we will occasionally engage with the theme of the Fourth Wall, primarily through group studio conversations. Residents’ ongoing studio work need not relate to the theme.
Residency seasons:
June, July, August 2027
September, October, November 2027
December 2027, January, February 2028
March, April, May 2028
Residency Details:
Successful residents demonstrate that they can manage their time to work productively during the short, 3-month residency, and can set aside significant time each week to be in the studio.
US-based or international artists or collectives working in any medium or discipline may apply. We accept artists at different stages in their careers, working in many different mediums.
Because of our large-scale studios, we give preference to artists who need space to work.
While we consider applications from alumni, preference is given to artists who have not participated in our residency in the past.
Artists living in countries with whom Triangle has partnerships should apply through the local open call for that partnership.
All residents are expected to:
Spend a minimum of 15 hours a week working in their studio.
Be present for studio visits with curators and critics, several times a month.
Participate in an open studio in the final month of the residency.
Participate in residency gatherings such as shared studio visits, a potluck, and group visits to NYC exhibitions.
Be available to participate in a 3-month residency AND for the full intensive dates: May 27-29, 2028.
Studio Details:
Studios are located in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY.
The residency provides 24-hour access to facilities.
Spaces range from 180 - 500 square feet with 13 foot high ceilings. If you intend to share your studio space with another person or people, you must apply jointly in one application as collaborators or a collective.
There is a communal area, basic kitchen, freight elevator, trash removal, slop sinks, and internet access.
There are communal tools such as hammers and drills; however, there are no workshops such as wood shops or metal shops on site. We provide access to Materials for the Arts for additional materials and supplies
COVID Safety and Accessibility:
Studios are located on the third floor, accessible by stairs and elevators. The studios, communal spaces and building facilities are wheelchair accessible.
Restrooms are located approximately 150 feet from the studio spaces. Triangle is a tenant in a building with shared facilities, and unfortunately there are no designated gender neutral restrooms.
Parts of the intensive will be held at locations outside the Triangle studios; we will ensure these activities are as accessible as possible based on the needs of the cohort.
Residents should be prepared to follow COVID safety regulations depending on the needs of the group; these may include mask requirements.
