Piggyback (Amused) (2019) is reborn as an edition through a new iteration of Joeun Kim Aatchim’s ongoing project Curse: Various Flowers, a series rooted in her poem of the same title—just as the original, the Piggyback painting was made alongside a sister-poem Aatchim wrote.

Joeun Kim Aatchim describes the recurring image of shoes nestled inside other shoes, which she calls Piggyback (어부바), as: “one of the most caring expressions of love I’ve ever illustrated. My hope is for my own humble poetry to be carried piggyback on a beautiful, loving image, and shared from one person to another.”

Joeun Kim Aatchim (b. S. Korea) is a medium-independent artist, prodigious diarist, and visual essayist based in New York. Drawing from personal histories, visual and linguistic poetry, memory, illness, and female psychology, she approaches her practice as a perpetual draft. For Aatchim, a draft is not something provisional or unfinished, but an end in itself—a way of marking experience while preserving its multiplicity, rather than resolving it into a single, linear narrative. 

Recent solo exhibitions include Miss Ceilingfan — ad nauseam at Almeida & Dale, São Paulo (2026); Virgin Thoughts at Travesía Cuatro, Madrid (2025); and Minimally Invasive at Gladstone, Seoul (2024). Her work has been presented at the Taipei Biennial (2025) and The Drawing Center, New York, among other institutions. In 2026, she was featured in Art in America’s “New Talent” issue. Aatchim received her MFA from Columbia University and BFA from New York University. She has participated in fellowships and residencies at Lighthouse Works, Triangle Arts Association, Yaddo, and the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, among others.

“I received the Triangle Fellowship at a moment when I was between studios, following surgery and the isolation of the COVID lockdown. At Triangle, I found myself working passionately through the night again—experimenting with materials like silk and mineral pigments in my small laboratory setup, and having countless conversations through studio visits. I filled my studio so completely that visitors would walk in and ask, “How many years have you been here?” It was a genuinely fruitful period and a pivotal point in my growth as a professional artist. I support Triangle because I want more artists to have the chance to experience that same freedom, exchange, and momentum.”
