Triangle is an artist residency program based in Brooklyn, NY that focuses on process, ideas, and building community. A new addition to our program is a 3-day intensive (May 27 - 29, 2028), featuring group activities and programming focused on the theme “The Fourth Wall.” The intensive reinvents our original program, the Triangle Artists Workshop. Begun in 1982, the Workshop was intended to “combat the loneliness of the studio,” in the words of our founder, artist Anthony Caro. Staff will use the Fourth Wall theme as a lens through which to curate the programs and activities of the May intensive. Artists will also have occasional opportunities to engage with the theme during the course of their 3-month residency.
Application Requirements
Applications are reviewed by a small group of Triangle alumni, curators, critics, and other professionals in the art field.

Narrative Questions:
Describe your artistic practice (200 words max)
Triangle will curate a customized set of activities during the May 2028 Intensive based on participants’ unique perspectives on the theme "the Fourth wall." What interests you about the Intensive theme? (200 words max)
What do you plan to work on during your residency? Triangle accepts artists with specific projects as well as more open-ended research interests; successful applicants demonstrate a strong understanding of what they can achieve in 3 months (200 words max)
FAQ:
Are there any fees associated with the residency?
Applying to Triangle is free until November 30, 2026 11:59PM ET. After this date, there is a $10 processing fee to apply. There are no additional fees associated with the residency. Residents are responsible for costs and coordination of their own housing, travel, visa, and materials.
Who is Triangle for? Has that changed?
Triangle is for artists who will make a concerted effort to participate in all residency programming. The new intensive element of our program prioritizes shared dialogue and connection between residents. Applicants do not need to have an MFA to participate, nor have participated in a residency in the past. Artists should not be enrolled in a program that grants a studio, such as another residency or degree-granting program, while participating in Triangle.
Why is the May 2028 intensive required?
Our goal is to have all artists participate in this shared experience, which we believe will greatly enrich their experience of the three-month studio residency, and provide connection to an entire annual cohort of engaged artists rather than just one season.
How will the theme relate to the rest of the residency? How engaged with or knowledgeable about the theme do I have to be?
We want to stress that no prior knowledge of or engagement with the theme is needed. Our program is interdisciplinary and tailored to the specific interests of our residents. We are open to any approach, as long as you are interested in the theme as it relates to your work. You are free to work in a self-directed manner during your 3-month residency, and you do not need to link the theme to your studio work. However, we expect that the theme will be woven throughout some of our discussions during the residency, as a point of interest for all residents.
My circumstances make it impossible for me to participate in the intensive. How can I participate in the residency?
Please get in touch with us at mail@triangleartsnyc.org to discuss your concerns. We wish to make the program as accessible as possible. If you expect to incur travel, accommodation, or other costs in New York to attend the intensive, please note this in the accommodations section of the application.
Questions related to the application platform and upload issues should be directed to Zealous. If you have any questions related to the residency and application requirements please contact us at mail@triangleartsnyc.org. No phone calls please. We will answer your questions as soon as possible, during business hours. Staff will not be available to answer last minute questions the night of the application deadline, so please avoid submitting last minute.
