Building on recent works that explore the blurring of fact and fiction—specifically in relation to horror as an aesthetic category and genre—David Steans presents a new reading, ‘Gruesome FX’ at Triangle. Ostensibly a sales pitch by ‘Dave’, an employee of make-up effects company Gruesome FX, the work riffs off the format of the pitch, the promotional demo and the technical tutorial, collapsing and frustrating the expectations of each to deliver an elliptical, recursive narrative about simulated bloodletting, performance anxiety, and opportunities for career progression in a small business.
